The Encouraging Theology of Marriage Series – Intro & Part 1 – Foundations

A dear reader of the Sola Gratia Life blog recently wrote a heartfelt letter about her personal marriage and household strife. An immediate sense of sadness for this Sister’s situation arose. I also felt a great sense of responsibility to respond in a way that encourages her in The Lord, bringing honor to Him, and by God’s grace, offering useful insight of Scripture that she can pray about and apply in her walk and her specific plight. I will be writing a series of articles that addresses the things she is seeking some help in sorting out. Although I am speaking specifically to this lovely woman as these blog articles are released, my hope and prayer is that this can be edifying for any woman whether you are going through something similar or not. As I wrestle with doing justice to the following letter, according to Scripture, I also expect for our faithful God to shape my heart into deeper places of humility, assurance, and the knowledge and grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ. With permission from the Reader who submitted this question, here is the letter written to me:

“Sola Gratia Life has been such a source of support for me in my journey to live biblically as a wife and mother.

It is with a heavy heart that I reach out to you today, humbly requesting your prayers and guidance during a difficult family crisis.

My marriage is currently facing significant challenges due to financial strain, which has unfortunately disrupted our peace at home and made our homeschool routine feel chaotic. Amidst this, I am finding it hard to consistently focus on Christ.

My husband and I have struggled to communicate peacefully for several weeks now, and I am deeply concerned about upholding my marriage vows and my responsibilities as a wife and mother.

In this challenging time, I would be incredibly grateful if you could share any relevant Scripture or a Sola Gratia Life devotional that speaks to a couple who may have lost sight of how to “love as Christ loved the church.”

Should you choose to respond, I would be honored to share your free devotionals with the women’s group at my church.”

Sweet Sister In Christ, my heart sunk when I read your letter because, although I cannot fully understand the nuances of what you are going through, I can imagine the turmoil, confusion, frustration, and hopelessness you must feel. I have been there myself, in a very similar situation. I have prayed for you and will continue to pray. I ask that anyone reading this will also do the same. Know that you are not alone, and may you become ever aware of God’s mercy, love and sovereignty in your life, being comforted and strengthened with a peace that surpasses mere human understanding which is found in our Lord, who is the embodiment of Hope. I am going to tackle your request for guidance in several categories, going from broad to more specific, in a series of blog articles that will be published once or twice a week. You will be notified via the Sola Gratia Life mailing list when they publish.
