Promise of The Holy Spirit Then and Now

As part of His intercessory prayer, Jesus asked The Father to give the Holy Spirit to indwell all believers to help us bear the fruit of our love for Him with our obedience (John 14:15). This is not just obedience of Jesus’ ethical commandments in context (see John 14:23-24), but the entire revelation from The Father (see John 3:31-32, John 12:47-49, John 17:6). In John 14:16 Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as “another Helper” to be with us forever. The Greek word allos used here means “another of the same kind”. The Holy Spirit, the Third Person of The Trinity has the same essence of deity as Jesus and as perfectly one with Him as Jesus is with The Father just with a different role (cross reference 2 Corinthians 3:17). The Holy Spirit is Creator — when The Father decreed creation into existence it was The Holy Spirit, who was hovering above the waters (Genesis 1:2), that brought forth everything from nothing. It was the Holy Spirit who inspired Scripture and breathed out the very wisdom of God to accurately reveal Himself to mankind for generations (2 Peter 1:19-21 and 2 Timothy 3:16-17). The same Helper promised to the disciples lives in the temples of our bodies to minister to and empower us to bear good fruit, all the while pointing us and those we effect to Christ. There is so much more that we can dig deeply into pertaining The Holy Spirit (that will be a blog post in the near future).

Questions to ask yourself:

  1. In what ways has the Holy Spirit ministered to you this week?
  2. The Holy Spirit connects all believers and unites us with Christ. What do you think is the most significant aspect of the Christian life that illustrates this?

Prayer Prompt:

The Holy Spirit is living in you. Ponder the wonders of this great miracle and ask God to reveal more truth in His Word to help you understand this Third Person of the Godhead.
