“Happy Monday”! That statement can either send surges of excitement of all the things we are going to accomplish or causes rolls of boiling anger or drudgery at all of the things we have to accomplish and how long the week will drag on until the weekend comes again. Where I am usually is somewhere in the middle of this spectrum, but I find myself sometimes in that low boil anger state of mind when I am reminded that it is yet again Monday. Don’t get me wrong — I love my life and everything about it — sometimes I just feel so… tired… weary of all the normal stresses that comes with maintaining the blessings I’ve been given to steward.
Thank God that in Galatians 6:9 He tells us “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” That all sounds great, but how are we to do that? There are many biblical ways to answer this. Today, my focus is on taking myself to The Well of Grace as I call it.
The Woman At The Well in John 4 was searching for satisfaction in all the wrong places whether it was within herself or outwardly in the things and people of this temporal life. And then Jesus comes along and shatters hostile cultural and spiritual barriers when He meets her at the well. First Jesus says, “Give me a drink” (John 4:7). The woman responds the way we often do when we are asked to do something seemingly intimidating — with excuses of her own lack (newsflash: we are all greatly lacking especially compared to a Holy God that is why we depend on Him). The woman continued to talk with Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, and she almost missed Him. If we are honest with ourselves, don’t we sometimes miss moments where we can really see Jesus for who He is because we’re so distracted by our shortcomings or our problems or our to-do lists?
After a few more exchanges, Jesus proceeds to tell her about The Living Water (John 4:10), water that pours life into the lifeless and refreshes and sustains the soul forever; life and refreshment that can only be found in Him.
When we are growing weary of doing good, that is, pursuing holiness in this walk with Jesus as we navigate this life full of distractions — let us not miss Jesus waiting at the well ready to embrace us and give us life and refreshment to endure.. endure in our vocation, endure in our challenges, endure in our faith. At the end of this race, there is everlasting joy, peace, and purity purer than the freshest springs because our source of Living Water, our ultimate treasure will be there face to face with us in all His glory and splendor.
