Almost 4 months ago, God blessed my husband and I with a daughter (her name is Grace) and it caused me to reazlize that mothers have an amazing role in growing and bringing new life into the world. We sacrifice our bodies, mind (sanity, haha!), energy, and more to the service of God in carrying and delivering His beautiful creation. God designed us not only to form the life that grows inside our bodies, but He also designed our souls to bond with our babies in ways that the scientific world is just beginning to understand the depths of (but will never fully understand). We get to be instruments of God’s handiwork as He meticulously and wonderfully fashions a tiny cluster of cells into a fully formed, tiny human being with her or his own mind, body, soul, and purposes predestined by God in His infinite wisdom before the foundation of the earth. Wow, what an honor it is to be used by God in that way! But let us not forget to acknowledge who opens the womb and is in control of everything in this incredible process.
Many cultures revere women for being creators of life. But we don’t create life — God is the Creator and Sustainer and Sovereign Ruler of life. And whether you are carrying a little life in your womb now, just given birth, or you have a number of years of motherhood to speak of, remember to embrace the season you are in right now.
Psalm 39:4-5 says, “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath!”
Job 34:14-15 says, “If he should set his heart to it and gather to himself his spirit and his breath, all flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust.”
Both of these verses don’t seem very uplifting, but they are actually full of hope. They remind us that our lives are fleeting. Therefore, every second of our lives are a gift from God. Is it any wonder that Scripture also tells us that children are a gift from God (see Psalm 127:3)? As such, we must steward our lives and our childrens’ lives and hearts well unto the Lord. We do so in sheer gratitude of the amazing salvation gifted to us so that we may have new life in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:17). Psalm 39:4-5 and Job 34:14-15 also point us to the one who puts breath in our lungs each day and each moment. God is Holy and so He is perfect — perfectly righteous, perfectly loving, perfectly just, and perfectly trustworthy. God keeps His promises. If we are in Christ, the embodiment of hope, we have the perfect Hope to place our confidence. And so, every season of life is a gift because each season has something unique and special to teach us about God, ourselves, and about this life and the next. In this season of Motherhood, may you grow in grace and truth of the Lord and model it in the training up of your children throughout their precious lives.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
- What is this current season teaching you about God, yourself, life on earth and about eternity?
- How will you remind yourself to embrace and savor the season you are in?
Pray freely 🙂
